Flickr DeFlashing

Flickr has removed the Flash from the photo pages! I think they did a nice job of doing something useful rather than <BLINK> Tag Writ Large with it, but without Flash it’s faster and now the page can be scrolled with the mouse pointer on the image—no more carefully moving the pointer off the image to get the wheel or the page-up/page-down/space to work.

Yea Flickr!

Beigeland

Since I have the Beige Alert/Journal/Photos theme going, I had to get a picture of this Chicago-area billboard:

Cyclo-O-ring

I have an ordinary O-ring:

O-ring

By holding it in on opposite sides and twisting,

O-ring being twisted

we can cause it to adopt a kinked shape:

O-ring, chair conformation

If your first thought is that this reminds you of cyclohexane in the chair conformation, then you might be a chemist.

Car bits

I found this on the ground while walking:

smashed spark plug, insulator
missing

I always wonder how things like this find their way to the places that I find them.

This bulb was disposed of properly, after photography:

Halogen car headlight bulb, used

I had to replace it after eight years of service. The right side headlight is easy to get at, but the driver’s side has the battery behind it.

Some Black and White Slides

You might be thinking that I just converted normal color positives to gray scale in the Gimp, but these are black and white slides shot on Kodak T-MAX 100 and processed with the Kodak Direct Positive kit. The film is shot at 50 speed and reversal processed to give positive images made of silver. I shot and processed these back in 1997.

long exposure of mist of water over stones

This is one of those scenes that looks best with a long exposure. This was on the shore of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee county.

shopping cart buried in sand

This is one of those things that I find hard to understand. How did that shopping cart get to the Lake Michigan beach?

tree harvester

A tree’s nightmare.

As soon as I got a camera with a shutter that could be left open for a long time I became fascinated by low-light photography.

Milwaukee antenna towers, 1999

Speaking of antennas, I have some old photos, from 1999, taken by the Milwaukee River where the towers grow. I had forgotten that these were from so long ago. You can see that this tower was still under construction at the time.

Tree Bike

Can I explain this, seen by the tower at the Parnell trail in the Wisconsin Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit?

mangled bike in tree mangled bike in tree mangled bike in tree

No, I cannot.

Imagine what wonderful things could have been done if the effort that went into this had instead gone into something productive. Alternatively, imagine what harm could have been done if the effort that went into this had instead gone into something more harmful. I’d hate to have to get it down, though.

Power line photo

I’ve had this photo on my wall for a few weeks now:

wooden pole, insulators, power
lines

It does somehow look a bit like a photo for a rural electrification promotion campaign sometime in the 1930s. Maybe in black and white?

I’m not sure what slogan should accompany it. I did not have in mind “Communism is Soviet Power plus the electrification of the whole country.”
